All cultures have habits, beliefs, and values that differ from one another. In this sense, interacting effectively with a native speaker of another language, belonging to another cultural universe, also depends on the ability to recognize these differences – critically, but also respectfully. Recognizing the different cultures involved in the process of meaning-making is usually called Intercultural Competence. About the Intercultural Approach, it is correct to say that:

  • The teacher who aims to assist their students’ development of an Intercultural Competence must, first of all, emphasise how and why some languages and cultures are inherently more evolved and therefore should prevail over others in most contexts of communication.
  • This approach emphasizes the importance of an intercultural idea of grammar, allowing learners to develop a perfect Communicative Competence, i.e. one that gets as close as possible to the native way of speaking.
  • The intercultural approach privileges the learning of cultures to the detriment of languagesper se,as the former has almost nothing to do with the latter.
  • This approach claims that the communicative situation should be a humanising use of the language, considering the particularities of each speaker and aiding him/her in acquiring the foreign culture as his/her native one is gradually forgotten.
  • Foreign language teaching, from an intercultural perspective, must value and respect the differences between people and between peoples, giving visibility to particular traits of subjects’ identities and cultural realities.
