The use of authentic materials in the classroom can be beneficial to the learner because of the real language exposure supporting a more creative approach to teaching, the possibility of practicing skimming and scanning, the encouragement to reading for pleasure, among others. Nevertheless, using authentic materials in ESP classes can also have some disadvantages, such as:

  • Too many structures are mixed so lower levels have problems decoding the text, and the vocabulary might not be relevant to the student's immediate needs.
  • The texts can be too culturally biased, being necessary a good knowledge of cultural background when reading, and the vocabulary in the text might not be interesting to the student’s real life.
  • Most of the texts are impossible to understand because of the cultural aspects involved, and the vocabulary is not relevant to the learner’s needs.
  • The texts will not be useful if they are very old or outdated, and the time preparing the class is not worth considering the results achieved.
  • Most of the texts found on the Internet are not suitable for the learner’s needs, presenting repetition of structures and demotivating the learner.
