Consider the following phrases:
I - What Beatles’ song do you like more: “Imagine” or “Yesterday”? II - My house, which was built by my husband, is now for sale. III - What is your favourite book? IV - Which shirt do you think I should by: the pink or the black one?
About the use of “what” and “which”, it is right to affirm that:

  • Sentence I is wrong, because when the interlocutor can choose among some options, the correct application is “which”.
  • Sentence II is wrong, because this kind of phrase needs a demonstrative pronoun. The right application should be “that”.
  • Sentence III is correct, because when the interlocutor’s choice does not depend on preestablished options the correct one is the use of “what”.
  • Sentence IV is wrong, for when the question presents choices among some options, the correct application is “what”.
