In the current Brazilian context, especially in educational institutions, internationalisation policies have proved to be of great relevance. Internationalisation is based on the idea that increased bonds between different institutions situated in different sociocultural contexts, and with different developments, can contribute to the growth of every part of the process. Just as, in distinct spheres, the world has become increasingly globalised, similar dynamics can be spot in what regards knowledge. In this sense, the study of foreign languages, particularly of English (as our greater lingua franca), plays a key role for mediating such process. Regarding the idea of language teaching in this context of internationalisation, it is correct to affirm that:

  • English is the only language capable to reach a successful international partnership between educational institutions, so it is crucial that its study is directed towards this objective.
  • New technologies must be included in the training of English teachers, as these technologies contribute for their students’ involvement with the demands of the globalised world.
  • The main prospect of internationalisation is a world where English is the only means of communication available to speakers, and this is why we should gradually abandon the teaching and learning of every other language.
  • Internationalising the teaching and learning of English is of paramount importance in our contemporary moment, as long as the hierarchies between underdeveloped and developed countries are explained and maintained by the teacher.
  • Internationalisation can only be considered part of English teaching and learning as long as students and teachers/professors effectively move from and to other countries.
