Sentence can be defined as a group of one or more words. On the other hand, sentence structure is understood as the way basic grammatical elements (a subject, predicate, and sometimes direct or indirect objects) of a sentence are combined. The rules for how a sentence is constructed are simple. These include the necessity for a subject, predicate, and object (in that order) in every sentence. Beyond that, we can also add elements like prepositions and conjunctions. In English, for example, sentences can be classified as simple, complex and compound. That being said, check the answer that provides the correct information about the types of sentence structure in English.

  • A dependent clause contains a subject, a verb, and a complete thought. On the other hand, an independent clause contains a subject and a verb, but not a complete thought, for it must be attached to a dependent clause to become complete.
  • A simple sentence contains a subject and a verb, and it may also have an object and modifiers. However, it contains only one independent clause.
  • A complex sentence combines two or more independent clauses with a coordinating conjunction (or, and, but, yet, for, nor, so – also known as FANBOYS).
  • A compound sentence consists of an independent clause and a dependent clause. A dependent clause is an incomplete thought and thus needs to be attached to an independent clause.
  • A compound-complex sentence contains one or more independent clauses and two or more dependent clauses joined exclusively by coordinating conjunctions or linking words.
